Who We Are

Irida is a civil nonprofit organization established in 2016 in Thessaloniki, Northern Greece. We work to protect, empower, and support the most socially and economically vulnerable women, with a special focus on survivors or women at risk of gender-based violence, to become active members of society and fulfill their goals and aspirations.

In the first and sole safe community space for women in Northern Greece, women receive the support they need to address their challenges, find solutions, and achieve long-lasting positive change. Through casework, legal, psychological support, skill-building, and employability services, women have access to space for learning, making responsible decisions for their lives, and pursuing opportunities for personal and professional growth.

In 2024, Irida Women’s Center was awarded the first Vigdis Prize for Women’s Empowerment by PACE and the Government of Iceland amongst 123 candidates worldwide. This prestigious recognition of our work is an extremely proud moment for us, fueling our efforts to continue fighting for a world where no woman is left behind.

Why We Are Here

Women play a key role in the socioeconomic development of society. Throughout history, the central role of women in society has ensured stability, progress, and long-term development. Women hold a valuable role as caretakers, educators, dynamic members of society’s workforce, and agents of positive change and progress. Yet, women are often left behind.

Gender inequality, violence, and poverty hinder women’s personal and professional progress and are interrelated. Poverty and unemployment can be both a cause and a consequence of gender-based violence, which has a tremendous impact not only on the lives of women who experience it but on society as a whole. Violence impoverishes women, their families, communities, and nations.

The costs of violence against women in the EU can be estimated to be almost 256 billion euros. At the same time, gender inequality means that women are often discriminated against and lack access to resources, which makes them vulnerable to gender-based violence and poverty. More than 1 in 4 women in Greece are at risk of poverty and social exclusion, while 4 in 10 women experience physical, psychological, or sexual violence at least once in their adulthood. Greece is among the last 3 places in gender equality among 27 EU member states and has one of the lowest rates of women’s employment in the EU.

We work with Greek, refugee, and migrant women who are survivors or at risk of gender-based violence and face economic and social vulnerabilities; women who lack opportunities for a safe life and a sustainable future for themselves and their children; women whose voices are not heard and whose stories are untold.
